"humming" noise while drive in 2 wheel drive but not 4 wheel drive?

Not sure why he even touched the axle shafts bolts at all. It's been a while, but I don't remember having to remove them for any reason.

I guess I should have done this one instead of paying a shop to do it! LOL

Help
I mentioned it a few posts back I think but ill mention it again. I cranked the steering wheel all the way to the left (and all the way to the right when accessing the opposite side) and ducked my head down behind the wheel and tire on each side and pulled the vacuum line off that goes to the IWE's. There is 2 vacuum ports on each IWE that the vacuum hose connects too. one is a vent and the other is the vacuum. On the IWE itself I stuck the spade shaped nozzle of the small can of lock deicer into each of the 2 ports on each IWE and spray it for about 1 maybe 2 seconds. not enough to fill the system full of fluid but enough to coat the inside of the IWE and let it work its magic. I then immediately reinstalled the vacuum line on each IWE.
I then started the truck up and cycled my 4 wheel drive selector to 4 wheel drive and back to 2 wheel drive a few times ( not fast.....but every 20 seconds or so to insure that it had time to engage the 4x4 and disengage also) . I figured by doing this that what little deicer i sprayed into the IWE's would get circulated through out the system and vacuum lines and such due to the draw of the vacuum pulling it through the system.
sorry for the long explanation...just wanted to try and describe what exactly I did as best as I could so everyone else knows what to do.
And again...so far I haven't had an issue with it since!
picture below of a can of lock deicer...notice the spade shaped tip rather than your typical cylindrical "straw" shaped tip. This worked excellent for the job because the tip rested on the vacuum port casing and made for easy spraying of the deicer into the ports.

Did you read this? https://www.f150forum.com/f72/how-di...m-esof-186872/ Usually its not to tough to pin point the issue. Something in your IWE system isn't working properly. You need to diagnose what. Check vacuum lines, check IWE, check the check valves. This issue has been fixed many times by many people you just have to do some diagnostic work to determine which part of the IWE system is failing.

Same Issue Ford F150 2014, in Texas!! We had few freezing days, now back to normal in the 70's, I was planning to take it to the dealer but after reading all this I will further investigate, By the way, with 2014, I don't know where the solenoid or the vacuum tank is. I will be looking today, I did most of the diagnosis that you'all did, but couldn't locate the solenoid! THANK YOU FOR THE VALUABLE INFORMATION

Solved....
Thanks to these forums, I believe I have solved a similar issue... found a random buzzing on my '04 5.4. It would disappear when switched to 4 wheel momentarily and back to 2. After reading through this thread, I investigated the solenoid and vacumm lines and voila!! I don't know how but backflow all the way to inlet of solenoid was completely blocked with dirt (no off roading, so how the dirt got in there I have not a clue) cleaned it up and so far issues
gone!! Side note: after 15 years of faithfull service I will be trading my truck for a new ranger......thanks to all in this thread and wish me luck!

Glad this helped. It was a mystery to me but since I just had the truck leveled (by Ford) I let them know right away and they set it up for a recheck and low and behold a bad vacume. And that was a 2015 little over a year old with much less than 3-4000 miles. So warranty saved me but it was a good lesson.
