Default How to "test" my 4x4???

I started this thread in the general topic section. It seems to have taken a turn for the worse. I seriously want to know how You check your 4x4 without hurting the truck. One guy says to engage it and make sharp turns in a parking lot, other says to drive in a straight line an NO turns. I was always told (when I first bought my 89 F150 4x4) to NEVER engage 4x4 on dry pavement. What do you do?

I just would like to know if everything works/engages before the winter sets in.

Thanks.

Nothing wrong with engaging it on pavement temporarily - just lay off the hard turning. Otherwise, just engage it, crawl under your truck and try to spin your CV shafts - if they won't spin, you're engaged.

Find a gravel or dirt road, leave it in 2wd, punch the gas and the rear wheels will spin and leave marks, put it in 4wd and do the same, the wheels won't spin, it will grip and go.

Thanks everyone. I was just really nervous about driving on pavement with it engaged.

My wife has had a little 4x4 suv for 8 years now. I believe her rule is to always shift into 4x4 on wet roads. In the snow you can't drive that little thing in RWD. So far the truck has been amazing. only fluid changed has been engine oil.

Hers has the 4x4 gear shifter. (V6 Chevy Tracker made with all Japanese parts)
