Default How to clean engine compartment?

Not sure if that's what you call it, but I popped the hood and realized just how crappy I treat my truck. That's all about to change though. I was wondering if there is some kind of special cleaning products I need to clean all the stuff under the hood. Will just some windex or 409 work, or just soap and water?

Also, I was cleaning out all the leaves that were stuck in the crevices and noticed that where the stock intake plugs into the side of the truck, there is nothing but leaves in there and it looks like it's completely clogged up, which definitely can't be a good thing. I guess I'm going to do the gotts mod to it, but just wanted to make sure I can do the gotts without having a tuner or anything. Also, can someone point me in the right direction as to where a good write up is on the 04-08 5.4 is? I've found one but I think it is for a different model because my intake doesn't look like the one in the pics.

Thanks!

I cover all connections with rags or plastic bags, disconnect the battery. I usually wipe it down good first spay, then degrease, spay again.the uncover it all. drive it around.now i treat the compartment with a good tire shine with heavy silicone or cd2. now wipe off the excess

Gunk engine cleaner/degreaser. just spray it on everything and rinse away.

I'd like to know myself. I miss the old trucks where you could just wash it off.
