How about 23mpg?
C'mon CAI and aftermarket exhaust guys? Where are you? Where are your numbers?
I (and you) have been talking allot of smack. You've been saying things like 'I've seen a CAI add 20 horses! It's true!'.....or, 'Of course a cai and exhaust gives you better gas mileage! Are you stupid or something?'
(no, those exact statements/words weren't used; but I'm trying to stir the pot!)
I said no way. An intake will give you 2-5 horses at best; and an intake and exhaust will do nothing but make your gas mileage worse.
Sooooooo.......I've said before that I've seen 24mpg before; no one really believed me till I posted a pic of still havering a 1/4 tank left after going 500 miles (35 gallon tank). Then you said......well; maybe.
Well, here are some more. This tank got 23 miles to the gallon.
I showed you mine, now show me yours...
2004 FX4 Scab
5.4L
104k miles
Completely stock except for an Edge Evolution and Truxedo cover
Fully loaded bed (I will get to San Diego tomorrow and have it weighed fully loaded and then empty after I unpack. I have to, the Navy will pay the weight)
Oh ya.....this tank includes me bull****ting around the Grand Canyon as well. Who knew you could do 90mph on the south rim?

I have an 08 regular cab 4wd. I have a airraid Cai and flowmaster exhaust. The best I have got is 15 highway and 13 in town. The truck still only has 20,000 miles on it. I have done what I can to get better mileage but nothing seems to work. It doesn't even change when I tow! Wish I could figure something out.
Damn. My truck normally gets 13-17 mpg and it got 18.9 once.
I dont beat on it and most of my driving is on the highway at about 5 mph above the speed limit, often with the cruise control on.

I forgot to add.....sorry.
Edge on Level I, using 86 octane.
Also worthy to note: this tank was all 70/75mph, except around the Grand Canyon. (normally I stuck to 63/65 for fuel economy, guess this tank throws my theory out of the water that 63mph is the best speed for MPG's)
And as always; cruise control was being used.

some trucks are just extremely efficient, i would be curious about your maintaince and up keep. thats the first big thing for good mileage. next would be some of the longer wear items coils, plugs, etc. those i hear can make a difference though im not completely convinced as to how much.
as for the aftermarket parts, i think they do work if properly done, and if your starting off with a good base. the programer im sure helps a lot.
im sure no one would argue that fuel mileage is directly related to the efficency. true cold air intake, a proper high flow exhaust, good hot spark (coils and plugs), proper timing curves, and good balance are all going to contribute. some things dont work well by themselves but do very well in combonation. the trick to aftermarket parts is setting them up propperly. high rpm heads and long tube headers are not going to work together.
another thing is the engine needs to be built and tuned like its a diesel. get the torque as low in the rpm as possible, the more torque you can create at cruise rpm, and the more you create for the same amount of fuel the better the fuel mileage. again its effeciecy.
sorry to hijack, i got a little side tracked. 23 mpg is impressive though even with the pics i find it difficult to swallow.

I assumed you were trawling when you asked if my truck was a 4x4 when I clearly posted it was an FX4.
Now you're asking again?
The FX4 is Fords top 4x4 package, skid plates and all.
