Default help with selecting right size muffler

hi, I did a lot of searching and pretty sure i know what I need but want to be sure before I make the purchase. I am reading a lot about the pipe size, single in, single out, dual out etc. offset in/out, 2.5 inch pipe etc.
I have an 06 5.4l and know I want a flowmaster (been a flowmaster guy for years and on my mustang).
not sure yet if I want to keep it with just one tail pipe in the stock location or go with two and having them exit out each side (vs straight back).

If I go with option one, stock as possible but just doing the muffler change, all I need is the model muffler that says 2.50 Offset In / 2.50 Offset Out correct?

if I go with option two, I have not seen the muffler that shows two outlets or does that mean they need to custom make the piping two do this? This is mainly where I am not sure. My shop does not sell flowmasters so i will be buying it at my local autoparts store. sometimes the more I search, the less I feel I know what to get. hoping somone can simplify it for me.
I do not want a catback system, not looking for any performance gains, just like the sound of the flowmasters. thanks

ps. i did see some flowmasters that had the single in/dual out but they list different pipe sizes. one says center in/dual out 2.25 and the other says center in 2.25/dual out 2.25. then I see ones that have the exact same description but different flowmaster part numbers. I emailed Flowmaster but did not hear back yet.

Catback doesn't give you any performance gains either unless you are installing some headers and high flow cats. How loud are you looking to be? That will tell as much as anything on the route you should take.

Center in, offset out will work the best. You can swap out the stock muffler with the flowmaster. You will also need a hunk of pipe to make up the difference. Do also use a hanger to support it as well.

hi, thanks. I am just needing to know i get the right muffler as far as size goes, all these different pipe sizes, center in/offests out, etc..
I am set on the flowmaster 44 or 40 series, muffler change only w/everything else to remain stock.
just want to be sure I order the right one since they have different models within the series.
I may end up calling flowmaster but will give them another day to see if they reply to email.

You want 2.25" pipe as you hit on in your OP. Center in/offset, or offset in center out, out with a hunk of pipe will be perfect. You can crawl under there with a caliper and validate. The body length with mufflers generally relates to how much is "muffled". Provided you still have your cats intact, you could probably get by with a shorter body. I think when i did a magnaflow I went with an 18" body. Now with the mods I have, I would go with the largest I can shove under there. Hit up youtube you can hear various combos.

If you're lucky, you have a brother to do the work for you even

lol. I am the computer geek, my brother thinks sometimes I am unable to wrench, so played that angle when the muffler was swapped out. Everything else I did. I just didn't want to crawl under there

If you are working with a shop, they might have mufflers on the shelf they can slip on for a quick listen.

hi, wanted to emphasize that I will not be doing the install myself. my local auto shop would be doing the work but they do not sell flowmasters so i would be buying the muffler for them to do the work.
just wanted to be sure I give the the right size.
