This completely answers my post about the same problem. Thanks so much for all the great info. Its good to know that I'm not going crazy as well. And radio feedback is much better than my Alien Screech description of the sound . This place is so much better than vwvortex!... just thought the boat was cool lol.

I would replace the bearing not the whole alternator..

I would not replace anything until you are certain that is the issue. Replaing an alternator is an expensive and time consuming job if that turns out not to be it.

Never through parts at your truck and hope to hit the issue. If it is indeed the alternator then a mechanics stethoscope (an inexpensive purchase) will tell you.

I had the same whine and it turned out to be the pulley bearing for the tensioner. A $7 repair

FYI, I've also read that the engine oil dipstick tube can make quite the high pitched whine if the o-ring seal on the dipstick is worn.

It's warmed up around here in the last day as well and the noise has not happened in the past day of so.

The two whines are different. It is probably the alternator. It happens to my truck when its cold and fades away as it warms. My ac compressor is currently whining so I have heard the difference.

Never thought of that. That could be my problem. The o ring is missing on mine

well i did a trouble shooting and i had heat AC all turned off would it still make that sound if heat and AC is off. understand how a O-ring for a dipstick can make the whining sound and if it could wouldn't there be an oil leak as well with that possibility ??

I had the same problem on my 07 f150 and it was the tensioner pulley. Not sure if anyone has said that but I figure a 15 dollar part is a better place to start then replacing alternator or something over 100 dollars
