Help with CEL!!
I have an 04 FX4 with the 5.4 3v. I recently got a CEL of p0012, timing over-retarded in bank 1.
Swapped out the VCT solenoid. Fixed it. 2 days later code is back. Day later gone. And so on and so forth for about a week. Then low and behold the CEL is gone and stays gone for about 10 dyas-2 weeks. I am so confident in fact that I returned the parts to replace the timing set and cam phasers.
Well, as you would expect, the day that Rockauto receives my parts on the return, the CEL comes back. Same code. I wait a few days for the return to be processed so I can "re-order" the parts.
CEL is off again!!
So here's my question, why would the CEL come and go intermittently?
My experience with mechanical components is that usually they fail or they don't; they don't usually work sometimes and fail sometimes. I know that these motors are sensitive to oil and maintenance, and while I won't swear on a stack of bibles that I changed the oil avery 3,000 miles exactly, I will say that I have done regular oil changes (meaning in the 3-5k mile range) since I bought the truck, with quality synthetic oils and motocraft or wicks filters. The truck currently has 137,000 miles and I have owned it since it had about 59,000.
i don't know a lot about the hydraulic tensioners and whether they might fail intermittently but it seems to me that this is an electrical problem...HELP
