Default Heat soak

06 5.4 starts up fine when cold, but when engine is warm the truck is very slow to crank and sometimes you can hear the starter grinding. Would the starter have trouble cranking from the added resistance from the heat of the exhaust and engine?

Not sure about the heat from the exhaust but have you checked your alternator? It kinda sounds like the alternator is not charging correctly and your battery is being used and later the battery has a chance to kinda rejuvinate and has a better charge when you try a cold start.

Yeah I thought about that too. I guess I'll have to go to autozone and have them test that and the battery. Wonder if they could check starter amperage too

I would think that they can, I remember having those things checked at Autozone before, just cant remember if the parts were on or off the car at the time. Post back your findings. Good luck
