Is having a phaser problem a fait accompli
I have 100k miles on my 04 5.4 but it has the new vat solenoids, its oil is changed every 5k with synthetic and I try to keep it well maintained. Does everyone who has 100-150k miles need to replace their phasers?

I just ordered an M340HV oil pump and plan to replace chains/tensioners/guides/phasers. Phasers are probably optional but they have been improved since 2004, while the valve covers are off I want to change them.

The phasers are not the root of the problem
If you are not having the codes and symptoms you don't need to jump. Oil clogs ,oil pressure is the problem .Carbon from combustion, bad seals on plastic tensioners then broken guides from whipping chains .
Good maint is changing to new VCT's as they get tired/ dirty and new ones improved , they will still be good if you do timing later .
During timing use old style steel ratcheting tensioners with no gasket to blow out .use oem phasors ,change lash's and rollers . The newest oil pump from melling just came out fall of 2017 ,the high volume 340hv . Clean out oil pan and oil pickup ,pull cams clean out all the valve train . Me I did an engine flush just before shutting down it ran even worse but helped clean it out . Don't do it if you are not immediately going to tear it down.
Clean everything real well while shes apart take your time .The timing is real simple once you learn how she works, pulling cams is simple , it avoids special tools and any chance of valve to piston contact . . Its just a bear to tear down to get in there ,don't have to back in again do it right .
Before you do timing evaluate valve train for damage ,maybe check crankshaft end play (see you tube) .If those are in trouble a reman maybe your best bet .

This poll was conducted and I think it shows that it's not as inevitable as it may seem when you spend a lot of time on this forum. Keep in mind, most people don't post here when things are just fine. That said, like the previous poster stated, maintain the vehicle.
