Default Grinding when starting

04 F150 5.4 Triton / 4X4 - 188K
Sometimes when I go to start my truck it grinds like the engine has already been started, then I try again and it starts with no issues. This happens about 1 out of every 30 cranks. I have checked the Starter and it looks look and the flywheel has no chips or cracks.

Was told by another owner that this was a defect in the 04 models and that sometimes the timing when you shutdown your engine it stops off sync. Any thoughts would be great.

My first thought is the starter is not fully engaging the flywheel. My guess is the starter is hanging up internally.

Sounds like the starter is not fully engaging to me also. Or else you do in fact have a some bad spots in the flywheel. Those are about the only two possibilities I could think of.

Old post but i thought that i would share possible fixes... obviously if its grinding then the starter is engaging so try that first and while it is off check the flywheel for damage... I have also heard the firewall solenoid going bad and not sending enough volts for starter to engage fully... Recently going through the forums 2 people said that their mechanics said that over time the bolt holes for the starter warp and stretch from repeated torque of starting (commonly found in the crown vic cop cars) so the fix would to retighten the bolts/ have new helicoils drilled into the transmission and they said theres an actual bolting sequence to the starter (top, bottom, middle)... I have been dealing with this issue for awhile and only recently tried the latter of fixes and its going ok so far
