you may have a tranny problem...have your Mech drop the pan and check it out...worst case you get a tranny fluid change..rear ends make noise also when theres a problem...

I thought mine was the torque converter because it was making noise from the front of the Trans. It would make a noise like a bad brake pad grinding on a rotor. It made the noise at the top of each gear before it shifted, and also when it downshifted. Like yours, it drove fine and had no vibrations at all, just that noise. Fluid looked and smelled fine.
Dealership had to put a ford reman transmission in it due to the fact that the planetary gears barely had any teeth left. The ones that busted off chewed up the inside of the case and everything they went through.
The reason i say unreliable junk is the fact that there was only 40,000 miles on it.

mechanic dropped the pan today. no metal shavings in the fluid but he said there was a touch of grey in the fluid.
Next step is to tear further into the tranny i guess. check out the torque converter...fingers crossed!

just wanted to update this and let everyone know it was the torque converter that was making the noise. New one in and everything is back to normal. Thanks for the responses earlier!
