Default Gonna replace everything.

If I wanna replace the phasers, chain guides, tensioner do you guys have any tips? What should I get in terms of a kit that has everything. Let me know, this ticking WILL be gone.

I don't even know if it's the phasers, chain, chain guides, or tensioner, but I've had enough and I have to start somewhere. It's embarrassing and annoying going down the road. I can't get a valid answer from anyone on what it is so I have to take a shot in the dark.

This is pretty much what I did. Bought the OEM timing kit off eBay and VCT solenoids from NAPA, and replaced everything over the course of a week. I managed to **** it up the first time in the following ways:

- Left the retaining clips on the tensioners, ran like **** obviously and had to tear it down and fix em

- Stripped the threads on the power steering pump shaft while removing the pulley (yay, new PS pump)

- Put the wrong model year rockers in (they switched them in 05, I have an 04, different OAL and a ridge cut into the top are the only visible differences but it ran like **** so it must be something else too)

- Must've installed the valve cover gaskets wrong or I shouldn't have reused the existing ones because I had oil leaks on both sides at the rear of both heads dripping onto the exhaust manifolds

I'm an electrician, not a mechanic, and this was my first time doing real engine work, so this was one hell of a learning experience for me. My advice would be to go slow, research as much as you possibly can, and do your spark plugs while you have the valve covers off (you have so much more space to work with when they're gone - I'm glad I did them because I found out the PO only had the rear plugs finger tight! What a douche eh)

Sounds like you had quit the time lol, I've done several complete tear down engine jobs, so I'm not to worried about doing it, I'm worried about replacing all the timing stuff and having the tick still be there. Could it possibly be a rocker or lifter? it's a constant knock/tick. It could be just those, and have nothing to due with the timing

I am feeling the same way, could not narrow the exact cause of my ticking, so I have the lash adjusters(lifters), followers (Rockers), phasers and new timing components now. I will be doing this work the last week of August, so wish me luck. I did not buy new gaskets, hoping I will not need them. All parts are OEM, I read too many bad reviews on here about the Dorman parts. Probably gonna have to buy a new torque wrench, I think the one I have now only does ft/pounds and I need an inch/pounds for the cam holders. Got new M/C 5W20 oil, gonna start the priming of the lash adjusters a few days before the work so that they are already primed and ready for the install. Prior to the work, I am going to run some Seafoam thru it and see if I get any smoking from the exhaust manifold (looking for any cracks) that way if I have any, I will be mentally prepared for some ticking after I replace these timing components. Wish me luck guys, will post results during and after.

I wish the best of luck to you lol, I have faith in ya! I'm trying to get the exact problem before I do mine. I'm a 22 yr old college kid who has little money right now, so this truck is all I have. It needs to be done soon though, I'm going back in just over 2 weeks. I need all the advice I can get =/

Well I started the tear down this morning, its almost a 100degrees outside, so I am taking a break now. Got the fan blade and radiator guard, power steering reservoir and bracket off (that bracket bottom bolt was a pita) and the VCT solenoids out (the seals were also a pita to remove). I had to trim the edge of my T27 handle off because the 4inch blade length made the handle hit the solenoid and it didn't reach the retaining screw. Makes me wonder if everything a pain to work on in this engine. I'm gonna start a new thread with pics on my teardown and anything that I find. How is yours going?
