Default Gear Indicator

Hello again. I'm a proud new owner of an '04 FX4. I have the the console/floor mounted shift lever. The bulb is burnt out and at night I have no way of telling what gear I'm in, can someone describe the method of replacing the bulb? Also, is there supposed to be a indicator on the dash to tell me if I'm in P R N D 2 1? I searched the forums and DIY bulletins and I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Open up the center console, and then grab a flathead screwdriver and a towel. Put the towel of the screwdriver and stick it in the hole where the console locks and pry off the whole piece that surrounds the shifter. It'll all come off in one piece. Then once that's off, to the left of the shifter, there will be a block of clearish plastic. If you look under that there will be a wire and at the end of the wire is where the bulb is. Twist and pull the bulb out and then just swap out the bulbs. Then piece everything back together. Take about 5 min to do

I didn't have to take the chrome piece off the shifter, just take the main trim piece off. The socket twists in the back of the shifter. 194 bulb.

Cool, thanks guys. I opened it up and I found that the wire had no power going to it and it was just sitting there. Guess the previous owned did a hack job on the truck. Now I gotta figure out what to do to get power down there.

how are you testing voltage? If your using a DMM then make sure to test your 12v and ground both at the bulb itself. Some bulbs in vehicles are negative trigger which means the vehicle is switching the negative side of the bulb to light it up.

I haven't had a chance to test it as I don't have anything proper to test it with. I have a little automotive electrical tester than lights up when you stick the alligator clip onto a negative part and a spike tip onto the positive but I won't work on the bulb socket.
