Default Gas in the intake plenum

I am currently in the process of changing out the engine of my 2005 with the 5.4 engine. While I was removing the intake manifold assembly, fuel came out of the port for the vacuum supply for the accessories. How would fuel get in there? The engine was running rough, missing on a couple of cylinders and there was evidence that it was running rich. I could smell raw gasoline at the tailpipe along with some grey white smoke. I just want to be sure that there is not a problem with the intake or anything else that will be going on the engine.

I have read fuel injectors sticking open are an issue with the early builds of the 5.4. That sounds plausible with what you describe. I would check them out before you get too far along. Best of luck.

Older engines had a vaccum line going to the regulator on the fuel rail. If that leaked fuel would suck into the intake. I don't know if its set up that way on your engine but worth a look

I was working over the engine disconnecting hoses and wires when I looked down into the intake ports on the heads. 3 of them had what appeared to be gas pooled on the closed valve. I have 8 new injectors ordered. I will also have to check into the fuel rail regulator. Thank you for the info!
