Question Fuel Pump Help!

Hello!
I have an '05 F150 5.4L (99k miles) that I think is in need of a fuel pump but I want to be certain before I purchase one. I had the dealer do a diagnosis and they said "bad Fuel Pump". Will a fuel pump Gradually go bad or just die all at once??

Is there anything else I can check first??

Symptoms:
-Loss of power
-Rough running and Back firing through the intake during FAST accelloration
-Sluggish and uneven accelloration. Doesn't act like a "Misfire" but more like it's simply not getting a steady stream of fuel

What I've already done:
-Replaced fuel filter (5k miles ago). This Helped a ton right away but the problems came back pretty quick.
-Dealer replaced a fuel injector (Sudo Recall). No great difference noticed afterwards. The dealer's diagnosis said "Bad Fuel Pump".

Any help would be appreciated!!

PS: If it is a fuel pump, which is the best approach?... to drop the gas tank or remove the truck bed?

Fuel pump control module......

do a search, there are several threads about it. If it's not the control module, then it's more than likely the pump.

Service manual says drop the tank. FYI, there is a special tool for the pump removal.

What about the Fuel Pump Driver Module that goes bad on these trucks? Instead of the old return style fuel system, this module actually ramps the fuel pump up and down to maintain pressure. It's a lot easier to replace (on the frame rail by the spare).

Gatorninja!

The module is indeed on the frame rail. Nice place for corrosion of an electronics module. (grrr.....)

When they put mine on the comp it showed no fuel pressure, then excessive fuel pressure, then open fuel pump.

The module is about $100 and an easy swap. If you reach up on the frame rail and it falls off in your hand, chances are ti's no good.

from what it sounds like is that it can be an intermittent failure...comes and goes as it wants too. way better than dropping the tank.....ugh thats a PITA

For a time, and intermittently. Mine acted like a bad misfire for about 1 month before the thing finally gave up the ghost.

well, i've replaced 2 fuel pumps in my time, and every time they have gone it was like.. oh my truck is stuttering, very low power, 3 minutes later, dead.
but, taking the bed off was a 30 minutes job, new fuel pump installed in under 3 hours easy, pump around 100 bucks
