Default Fog Lamp Upgrade

A few years ago I changed out the bulbs in my fog lights to Sylvania Silverstar Ultras. They are nice bulbs with a cleaner light. A couple weeks ago one of them burned out. I figured it was no big deal cus they were a couple years old and its good to regularly replace halogen bulbs every couple of years because they dim. I pulled out the bulb and took it into the store with me to match up. The numbers on the bulbs said it was a 45 watt H10 (if you look it up its a 9140 bulb) This bulb is no longer in production in the Silverstar Ultra line. After a few minutes standing there looking lost a sales person come over to help. He suggested using a 9005 bulb instead. Looking the package over, its the same design but instead of the 45 watts of the original, the 9005 gives out 65 watts! 20 watts is a huge difference. He suggested that i buy two because i would notice the difference and it would bug me. I said that i would just wait for the other one to burn out.

Two days later I went back and bought the other bulb. The difference was so great between the two that the left side of the roadway was greatly brighter than the older right side.

The bulbs are 25 bucks each and im sure you can buy them in normal cheaper versions, but the Silverstar Ultra is a pretty sweet bulb.

how are these new bulbs working for you? Have you blown any fuses or anything bad happen since you are using a higher wattage bulb? I was thinking of trying this.

Be careful with the 65 watt bulbs. If you have the 06+ round fog housings, you will melt the lens with extended use of the 9005 bulbs. The larger housings of the 04-05 trucks will be okay with them.

Then turn them off all the time, because nobody needs to be blinded by the glare these foglamps create when fitted with cheap aftermarket HID bulbs.

As of yet, i havnt had any issues with using the new bulbs. The guy that works there (who iv known for years) told me that its the same bulb that Chevy trucks use in their daytime running lamps. When i first changed out the first bulb i felt both the lenses and the 65 watt side was not much hotter than the 45 watt side. I guess time will tell but even if in a year or so these housings get "melty melty", It will prolly be time to replace them anyways seeing as how they are constantly getting pelted by rocks and iv already replaced one due to rock damage.
