flywheel replacement
good morning guys, i am needing to change out my flywheel and was curious if there are any must do parts that while replacing the flywheel i should also replace other parts???? Rear seal and ?????? Should i replace the starter as well since the flywheel might have damaged the starter as well???
I do not know your experience level.
Obviously you are going to have to pull the trans. You are going to need to lift the truck WAY up and support it securely and then use a trans jack to maneuver the trans from out from under truck frame. Unless you have access to a lift, this is a tough job. Depending on make model year top bolt on starter can be a bear. You did not ell us what you are working on but I will assume you are working on a Ford 4R70 series trans which has a pan that is not flat so a homemade spacer is a good idea for a more stable lifting surface. You may already have experience with the points above but many others have never tried pulling a trans.
The routing for the electrical is important so take pictures of wiring harness connection points. Dipstick bolt (depending on model) is a double stepped arrangement and needs to be placed in proper hole during re-installation Depending on location some of the trans bolts are different lengths and need to be re-installed in proper locations. Top left bolt holds wiring harness om some models.
As far a replacing starter, and depending on your budget, I would say that post removal inspection would dictate decision on that. If possible (budget) I would replace with Motorcraft starter. You might consider new U-Joints but some Ford models are very hard to find and may requires driveshaft replacement.
If removed reinstall ground strap that goes from engine/trans to firewall. Some transmissions have a spacer between engine and trans, make sure you re-install if applicable. While trans is removed you might consider replacement of vacuum hose attached to the back, drivers side of engine (some models) as these are problematic to replace with engine trans installed. Do a visual inspection of exhaust manifold bolts, now is a good time to replace any that may be broken.
If applicable, make sure transfer case fluid is restored to proper level after re-installation, as it has a tendency to drain out while transfer case is removed.
