Flywheel peephole question

Flywheel peephole question
Okay so I have a 2007 FX2 with the 5.4 and obviously a automatic transmission. I changed the oil for the first time today (I do all my own maintenance) and noticed that the hole on the bottom of the flywheel was open and I could see the teeth of the flywheel. My question is should it be open like this or is there a rubber plug that should be in there? Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question......I am assuming open is how it is supposed to be.

It was a pain. The clearence between the supecharger and the firewall was too little to allow the engine and transmission to drop. We either had to remove the supercharger or raise the cab a few inches. We decided to raise the cab, didnt want to locate a gasket, and mess with the charger, plus I had a frame and body repair guy helping. Without the supercharger it wouldn't be that bad.

Thanks for looking! I found it on Fordparts.com, part #7N171, its $7.38. Funny thing is, a guy just posted about mice in his bellhousing and the clutch plates were all gummed up with grass, hair and gunk. I will be ordering a new plug tomorrow if they dont have one at my local dealer.

Wow! I can't believe you went through all of that. I simply jacked the truck up, unbolted the tc from the flywheel using the access hole on the driverside, unbolted the starter, trans dip stick, unbolted the trans, dropped the driveshaft, and cross member. Slid the trans back on a floor jack about 6-7" and changed the flywheel. Took about 4hrs.

Wow, sheared completely. Glad it didn't do any other damage. I was able to reach the top bolts by using every extension and adapter I have plus 2 of my dads. This allowed me to sit at the tail shaft with the ratchet and turn. The hardest part is getting them back in and started by hand and then getting the fuel lines to snap back in their clip style holder. Third time I've had to pull the trans.
