The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound

The only thing I regret was using non-OEM or a good quality aftermarket parts and not replacing the oil pump at the same time.
I really believe that replacing the oil pump on my last round had a huge effect on noise at start up. After I installed the new oil pump I didn't have the rattle I had before I replaced it.

I have not had a vehicle come back that I used the Dorman phasers on. Im sure defects are possible, but in general, I think they are a good replacement.
Time will tell but I have not over 50,000 miles on the ones I have done with no troubles

When I try to order the Dorman cam phasers is there a right and left side as rock auto just list it as stated. I want to replace both but don't want to receive two lefts or two rights. Thanks

Like others here I've spent some time researching this subject. It seems the issues are contamination or oil pressure related. Contamination is caused by lack of oil changes or by crappy oil filters that fall apart. In either case, most of the dealer mechanics I spoke with said the problems will return, and engine replacement is the only real cure. Use Motorcraft filters, and change the oil regularly.
The main cause of low oil pressure at the phaser is leaking timing chain tensioner seals. I read you need 33psi at the head for the phaser to operate properly. There is a test port on the rear of the head, though I believe it's very difficult to get to. I also read the online the orange tensioner seals are the ones that leak. The new dealer ones I bought are black. The seal is under the tensioner, so you cant see it until you take it apart.
I will be doing what the dealer mechanics told me do. The truck is getting new Dorman phasers, new Dorman solinoids, new Ford tensioners, and new Ford guides. I also bought timing cover and valve cover gaskets at the dealer. The original gaskets are supposed to be reusable, but why chance it. They don't cost too much. They told me they reuse all of the bolts other than the phaser bolts. They also reuse the chains and crank sproket. If you read the service manual, it appears some/all of the timing cover bolts are also TTY (torque to yield) along with the balancer and phaser bolts.
I bought the Dorman phasers on Amazon for $82 each. I got lucky there. They are usually $102. I also bought the solenoids on Amazon for about $50 ea. The gaskets, guides, and tensioners were about $200 wholesale at the dealer.
Unfortunately, I have to work 7 days a week for the next two months, so I'm hoping to find a dealer mechanic to do it on the side.
