I know this is going to sound silly but, should I set the engine to TDC prior to removing the old chains, tensioners, etc? I’m ready to remove the components but I’m afraid I won’t get the timing right for reassembly. I don’t want to remove the roller followers if I don’t have to.

You don't HAVE to. If they are all in place, you just about have to have a helper using a socket on the Phaser bolt to 'torque' the cam a few degrees against valve spring tension while the chain is put on and aligned with colored chain links.

Independent of the issue of installing chains with all followers in place -- I would recommend removing cams and inspecting journals / roller followers and lash adjusters as part of the job though. A bad journal or lash adjuster can screw up an otherwise good timing job.

Default timing and phaser procedure question???

I was wondering if any of you out there did this job and did not remove the roller lifters? I have seen people use vise grips to hold the cam in place while they do the chain, and phaser and tensioners change. I think that this way would save tremendous amount of time and make the job much easier, not to mention the added cost of the spring compression tool. I think that if you set the engine on TDC on the crank and lock the cams with the vise grips (making sure you loosen the phaser bolts before unhooking the chain then locking the cams)you can install the chain, guides and tensioners. If you set the crank with the key at 11 o'clock position and the dot at 6 o'clock making sure your marks on the phasers are at 2 for the drivers side and at 11 on the passengers side. I think you can put everything back with no issues. This is just a thought, I am about to do this job I am just terrified of pulling out rollers and reinstalling them. I have done timing jobs before but on belt driven cars not chain timing sets. Any recommendations would be appreciated before I tackle this job. I get a racket when I start the truck and about a minute later it gets oiled up and runs great. I dont want to blow this engine. Also, what is the best timing chain kit out there ? I was wondering if OEM is the only way to go because their prices are insane compared to these others. Any one out there has used the Cloyes set?

Have you watched Ford Tech Makuloco's videos? Here's the first of 4 parts. Not sure how he does it but he also has a video on the roller removal.

If you're going in there, do the lashers and followers.

If you all remember, I just did my phasers, timing, oil pump, and vct solenoids. It was a risk, but I opted to wait on doing my lash adjusters because I needed the truck. Well... the truck is misfiring and idling rough - mostly in reverse or when stomping on the gas. Or randomly on the interstate. Super comforting. The first time this happened, I was sick of it all and took it in to the local Ford dealership. $300 later, it was a fuel injector stuck dead wide open. Literally dumping liquid fuel out the exhaust pipe. It ran fine for a few weeks, and it is back again. $200 later, the dealer said it is probably a bad lash adjuster. I knew one was bad and it's cam lobe was a little scuffed, but nothing impressive. Two other lobes had very faint scuffing, but you had to really look.

Basically... I am definitely going to replace a few (if not all) passenger bank lash adjusters, etc. I'm debating replacing the camshaft as well. The driver's side looks great, but should I redo them too?

I'm looking to order parts soon. Parts list recommendations? I don't want to get elbow deep into this and realize I'm missing a tiny part that is critical and be out a vehicle for a week. Parts stores out by me are terrible.

Default oem parts for timing?

I posted above about timing chain parts for this job? I have to do the timing. chain, guides , tensioners, oil pump, phasers and I am also going to do the roller followers and lash adjusters. but like I have stated above hem parts are thru the roof and I cant afford that at the moment. Any place where they sell these ford parts at a reasonable price? I would like to use ford parts. Also, has anyone done this and used a Cloyes set? they sell you the whole kit it looks reasonable at a good price. Just wondering any help is appreciated . Also, only using the telling 360 pump.

Jaiello:

Freedom Racing has a full OEM timing kit available on their website. They also have variations of the full kit on eBay. They seem to offer some of the most aggressive pricing for OEM.
