Very few can't be fixed on an engine. It's just whether or not you think it's worth fixing AFTER they tear into it. At least they should tear it down and diagnose it, then you can decide to keep the truck and a reman or maybe sell it all and look for something else. But for them to just say "oh yeah it's bottom end noise, we don't want to work on it so just get a reman." I get that they're probably busy with warranty work, but I would suggest a diff shop if I knew I didn't have time to check out yours. At least I know I'd be an honest mechanic
Agreed! Got an appointment Tuesday this week w a shop i use for all the work i dont want to do. They have never let me down. I was thinking Ford dealer could diagnose the issue, after all we are told daily by The Rock they know Ford’s better than anybody.

But back to the original point you can use the method I used. It’s actually a piece of cake
I appreciate the info, I really believe all I have to worry about is doing is, phasers, guides, tensioners, chains etc. I bought the truck with 128979 miles and now it has 145250. I have yet to get any trouble codes related to timing or anything. I've been on the interstate with fairly large size pieces of scrap concrete in the back, lumber from lowes driving at interstate speeds and it has yet to do anything out of the ordinary. Only thing I hear as it warms up, is cam phaser noise, oh and the engine shakes a little, probably due to phaser issues.

i took the truck to my local guys today. They duplicated the sound and used a borescope to find that my flex plate (flywheel) is cracked! Ford did not do that! There plan was to replace the engine and the noise would go away. Probably so, after they also replaced the flywheel. $450 vs $7000, sounds like a great deal! Thanks for the advise guys!

A New engine seems to be the default repair solution for most dealers. Very disappointing to say the least. As for your flex plate. How does one crack one? I looked it up and it seem pretty remote.

not sure how or why, however i come across several cases where this did happen in the f150 along w several other types of cars/trucks. YouTube is filled w this issue. Good thing it was there, it lead me right to the problem.

Hey again guys, I plan on doing this timing job next week over a 4 day period. Before removing anything, does the crankshaft need to be at TDC or 11 and 6? I plan on just locking the camshafts with some vise grips. It seems like when you put the crankshaft at TDC, the phasers want to rotate counterclockwise. Based on a video I watched, there are two good strong holding points for the vise grips on both sides.

That is CORRECT. That is the reason they recommend removing those certain roller/followers , OR , use vice grips.

Alright, so TDC when you are locking them in place and want to remove everything and 11 and 6 when you have the chains back on?
