The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
#1121
If I remember correctly I broke mine lose with an electric impact. I had someone hold the vise grips. OTC makes a " tool" that locks the phaser to the head.

Thanks 06.
So tech tip #113....When cheating the system and only removing the pump and not pulling the pulley for the power steering pump, be sure to put the bottom bolt back in before bolting the pump back into place otherwise the 4000 turns you did with the open ended wrench on the other 2 screws became pointless and get ready for 8000 more turns.
Grrrrrrr

Since you will be under the truck...put the bottom bolt in the PS pump and use the wires with the cap to hold it in while you go back up to get it set in place and the other screws started. Bazinga.

Even with the pulley removed it looks like a much easier task to fenagle the bottom bolt in there first upon reinstalling it all.
That being said, take that bastard out first and it would probably make the PS pump removal a lot easier. I used a closed end ratcheting wrench and went from the top to get if off.
Got the timing cover off tonight, I'll work on pulling chains tomorrow after work.

Here's a word to the wise.... If you have missing parts of the guide and can not find them in the oil pan slot and pull them out, DROP THE OIL PAN. I had the same problem with my expedition. I read posts on here that said not to worry about it, the parts probably washed out with the oil change and so for ... The truth of the matter is the parts were sucked up in to the oil pickup tube and nearly blocked the tube. This caused excessive wear on the cam shaft journals and now I have oil pressure issues. There are no bearings in the camshafts that can be replaced and if this happens to you the only fix is to replace the head assembly $$$$. So take the time, I know from experience, to drop the pan and clean the tube and the pan. I had to remove the crossover but that is relatively easy to do.

I used all Ford parts over the weekend fixing our truck. I thinking I put the tensioner marked "R" on the drivers side and the one marked "L" on the passenger side. Truck seems to be running fine. Do you think this makes a problem?

It is backwards but I have no clue if that matters. When speaking of the engine...always reference it as if you are sitting in the drivers seat. Drivers side is left, passenger is right. You don't judge the handing standing like a deer in front of the truck.
