Default A few questions about interchangeability

I have an '07 f150 with the 5.4 flex fuel engine and was wondering what my options are as far as engine swaps and/or interchangeability of components with these Ford modular engines.

My truck currently has 310,000 miles on the odometer with few issues, and I'm determined to get either a half a million out of it or run in until she clear flies apart. I have replaced the transmission, rebuilt the rear end, wheel bearings, yada, yada, yada, and now it's time to freshen up the engine bay.

This is a work truck that I don't want to spend a fortune on so I'm looking for the cheapest alternative, my days of highly modified play toys are over.

I would consider a low mileage salvage engine but it seems the 3 valve 5.4s are a hot commodity, high priced, and hard to find. The older 5.4s are much easier to come by and way lower priced. What am I looking at as far as installing an older 2 valve engine in my truck? They are easier to find and much cheaper. Do they use the same sensors, harness, pcm, and other peripherals?

Don't mind rebuilding one. I've done literally a thousand rebuilds or performance builds but I've never had the head off of newer Ford engine, all either older engine platforms for racing or street rods or new aftermarket components for circle track racing. Could I put together an older model short block and use my rebuild top end components?

I was thinking of maybe even finding a 4.6 and throwing her in there if that's an option. I have read a few threads on doing this swap the other way around but have seen nothing about going this way with it (I guess I'm the odd ball here). What would I be running into there?
