F150 Burning Through Gas
I have a 2006 F150 Lariat 4WD with the 5.4L and I have run into a problem with it burning a lot of gas.
I noticed on the way to work today that it was using A LOT of gas. The way noticed it was I saw the Miles to Empty display drop 4 miles within a distance I know to be about 1 mile.
The strange thing is that my average mpg is roughly the same (average about 15-16 mpg)
The truck is not throwing any error lights
I then thought that it might be a leak, so I stopped to get gas on the way and checked under the truck both while it was running and turned off and I could not see any signs of a leak.
If anyone has any ideas on what could cause this please let me know

When you fill up and note the miles run on a tank, is it really different than what the computer is telling you?
If it is, then the computer is failing (or one of the inputs to it, like the fuel sender).
If not, then it might be a leak somewhere.

All you've noticed is your DTE dropping faster than you expected it to. If this truck is new to you, you should read the manual (see the online version at owner.ford.com if you don't have a printed copy) to read more about DTE, which is calculated off the last 500 miles driven (at least on the newer vehicles). Parking on an incline can throw it off also.

Your method to determine it is using a lot of gas is very subjective and has no before/after comparison data. The DTE is not a viable method IMO.
Would like to know total miles per full tank for last 3 fills and how this compares to current tank, this is much more objective.

I replaced all injectors at 100k ,with new o'rings .
Rather than clean them and as they had a bad reputation for this year . They work very hard . I will change them again at 200k which is not far away. I don't want to risk a hydro lock or cat problems with bad injectors .
I use new ones not rebuilt .
If fuel leaking on top of engine she will evaporate fast ,should smell it though .
Has this truck had a new set of boots /plugs .

I have this inconsistent reading in my 07 Lariat screw. The "miles to E" drops faster when I get down to, and below, 100 "miles to E." Once I get to 65 miles to E I better be close to a gas station....under 50 and my truck is on fumes.
To echo what others have said, if you don't log your mileage manually then it's tough to say what's going on. I have no faith in the 'puter" or the gas gauge so I keep a log of my fuel consumption.
Good luck to you.

Just a side note- don't run her to E
The fuel cools the fuel pump .Running it low is hard on it . Also the more air you let into the tank the more trouble with water condensing in tank.
I agree you should log odometer to gallons at fill up over 3 tanks to get a real mpg. Don't top off .

Go to the dollar store and buy a composition book and log mileage and gallons every time you put in gas. Log everything else you have done to the truck also. Put all the receipts in the book too. Over a few tanks you can calculate what you are really getting. Also if you ever decide to sell it the log book will help.
