Default Exhaust question...

i have a 4.6 07'. if i remove the exhaust piping from where the 3rd catalytic converter begins what will happen? so basically, all i'll have for exhaust is my headers, then the two catalytic converters running from them, and lastly the exhaust where they come together as one pipe and that's where my exhaust would stop. someone said my check engine light would come on due to the computer not being able to read whatever in the 3rd catalytic converter which would be removed. what's the difference between me just taking the exhaust off and buying a different exhaust from the check engine light standpoint? i would think that i would have the same problem if i bought after market exhaust with my check engine light then. obsiously i should get a little added horse power out of a new exhaust, but for the $ i don't think it's worth it and the main reason i want to do this is for the sound. what do you guys think?
