88 Jeep Cherokee had a hood mounted light that had some kind of tilt switch that would only turn it on when hood is up and is connected to a self retracting cord so you can move it around the engine compartment as needed. I would look for one at a junk yard and adapt it to your truck. It sure came in handy for me.

 

Working on my gf 06 f250 has one and it has the tilt switch built in and is wired into the dome lights
