I agree crankshaft sensor will cause hard starts and other oddities. Might try your spare key if you have one just for grins to see if it starts consistently.

I have changed the fuel filter that was not it. I have a new crank sensor that I have not put on yet. I dont think that is my problem. The fuel pump does not come on sometimes. Lack of fuel is the problem. It will run on ether.

my advice to you is to get a great mechanic that has his "real" scan tool. My mechanics was the real deal. Not one that you get at auto zone. It took a while, but he came out and caught it in the act. While my car was trying to start in one of its fits, the crank shaft sensor showed like 19,000 RPM yes the right amount of zero's.

There are a number of systems that need to be right in order for the truck to start. You may think its fuel, but if the right sensor doesn't show up right then it won't send the "go" signal to the fuel injectors. They do this so they don't just pump the cylinders full of fuel when it won't start due to other sensors not ready.

My recommendation is to find out what exactly is causing problems, before throwing more parts at it. There could be something else or other sensors that could be out of kilter as well.

Good luck to you. I hope that you get it figured out! Please post up what you find so it could aid others in fixing a similar problem

So you can hear the fuel pump not turning on/turning on?

Have you tried a PCM re learn process?

It's quick and free to do, search for it.

I have used a Snap on scan tool. Shows nothing wrong. Had it on the truck when it was running and fuel pressure was good. When the truck wont start the fuel pump is not running. Something is not turning pump on. How to you reset ECU? I have disconnected the battery and even put a brand new one in.

Update. The r5 relay for tow charge seems to be the issue. I replaced relay and truck starts. Then it won't start again sometimes. I pull that relay and put same relay back in and it starts! WTF???????

I nearly bought an 08 screw that did this exact same thing when I test drove it......ran fine then at low rpm when backing up started knocking terribly bad and nearly died. Give it a little gas and ran like a champ. Took it back to dealer and come to find out it had little to no oil pressure at idle. They ended up putting a junk yard engine in it. Sad....only had 70k mmileson it.

Try fuel rail pressure sensor. Mine would randomly run like crap and die and sometimes not start, swapped it from my cousins king ranch and it ran great. I think it's like $90

Update. I replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor and truck runs great and starts everytime!!!. I used it all weekend and one time while pulling a boat at idle, it did do the low rpm sputtering thing but I have always thought that was timing chain tensioner issues. Thanks for all the help!!!
