Default EDGE or SCT?

I just got my truck about a month ago. (2005 5.4 SCAB) I am tired of driving a pillow... I hate the soft shifts, so I am thinking about getting an Edge or SCT programmer to firm up my transmission. What are your thoughts? Good or Bad. I'd like your input so I can make an educated decision. Any reason I shouldn't buy a used one?

Well I did my research and I'm going to buy a used edge and then send it to php for custom tunes. That's my story

SCT is not as "sexy" as the Edge. It has no dash pod or visible monitoring. The Edge only has default tunes. You can't have a tune written for your truck when you have the Edge. The SCT would be my choice. It has default "tunes", but tunes can be written for your truck and can be stored on the SCT.

Nothing wrong with buying a used one. You have to make sure that the owner you buy it from, unlocked it. If you buy it and it is locked, you can get it unlocked for a fee.

Basically what the OP needs to do. Research. He's got a good start.

Get a new SCT X3 and some custom tunes. I have 3 Troyer tunes and 3 from 5 Star. The Troyer tunes are better, IMO, but you will have to wait for them. Mike at 5 Star will get you tunes quickly and they're pretty good. Canned tunes, like with the Edge, are better then stock but custom is the way to go.

3 at one time. I have my Troyer tunes on it now but I still have the 5 Star on my PC. My best tune is a Troyer 93 performance. I really have no use for any of the others.

Thanks guys. That is exactly what I was looking for. I was leaning towards the SCT cause I really don't care about having a screen. I just want to firm up the shifts and possibly get a custom tune down the road. I called a couple places about getting a used one unlocked two of the places were going to charge $150. Good Info.

'08f150stx do you know if there is a limit to the number of times the SCT will reflash? I read somewhere a guy was selling a programmer and said it had 4 flashes left. I can't find the post again to reference.

I have the Gryphon and really like the added readouts. Having the ability to monitor PCM outputs real time is nice. Also like the performace.

Never heard of a tuner maxing out as far as a "flash" count. All I have heard of is how many programs it will hold. The type of programming the tuner does is called a flash I believe. I would presume that loading the tune (program) is a flash also.
