Hello all so I was recently trying to update the lower door speakers in my crew cab and am running into an issue. All speakers I’m seeing online and I bought the JBL GTO 939 and it didn’t fit but further more didn’t have a place to plug my tweeter in at, so I’m wondering do I have to do my tweeters as well if I wanna do my door speakers then since they are ran through the door speaker?
This is is what Google's AI says. Hope it helps you.
1. Size adapter: 6x9" to 6x8"
The JBL GTO 939 is a 6"x9" speaker, but your F-150 has a 6"x8" factory speaker opening. You will need a speaker adapter bracket to mount the new 6x9" speakers into the 6x8" factory opening.
How it works: This plastic adapter plate bridges the size difference, allowing the larger 6x9" speaker to be screwed into the factory 6x8" bolt holes in the door.
Where to find: These can be found at any major car audio retailer and online (e.g., Metra 82-5600, American International SAK135_69).
2. Wiring adapter: 72-5600 harness
Instead of cutting the factory speaker wire, you can use a speaker wiring harness adapter (commonly model 72-5600).
How it works: This adapter has a plug that snaps directly into your truck's factory wiring harness. The other end has spade connectors that slide directly onto the terminals of your new JBL speaker.
Where to find: These adapters are readily available from online retailers and car audio stores.
Addressing the tweeter issue
The JBL GTO 939 is a coaxial speaker, meaning the tweeter is built into the center of the speaker. This means your original factory tweeter, located separately in the door, will no longer function. The wiring adapter described above connects to the lower speaker, so there is no extra output to power the factory tweeter.
To proceed, you have two options:
Disconnect the factory tweeter: This is the simplest option. You would just install the JBL coaxial speakers and not connect anything to the original tweeter wires. The GTO 939s have built-in tweeters, so you will still have high-frequency sound, just coming from a lower position in the door.
Upgrade to a component system: If you want to use a separate tweeter in the factory location, you need to return the GTO 939s and purchase a component speaker set. This includes separate woofers, tweeters, and an external crossover. This would allow you to utilize the factory tweeter location for a dedicated, high-quality tweeter.
