Do I Get a Truck Cap?
I currently have a soft tonneau cover and was wondering if maybe a cap would be nicer to have. I don't really haul much stuff, and when I do it is usually a load of wood or stones. I was thinking if I got the truck cap I would also get the bed rug for the inside.

I've got the retrax retractable hard cover. I love it. Wouldnt trade it for anything else. Hard cover when I need it, retracts into itself like a garage door opening and opens up pretty much all the bed when i need to haul stuff with just a flick of a lever. Also locks and has weather stripping.

out of the last 4 trucks I owned I had a cap on 2 of them I didn't put one on this truck only because I'm tired of towing around my quad but if it wasn't for that I would have one, I miss a cap it's better at keeping things dry and can fit more crap when doing my hunting and fishing trips although that ain't necessarily a bad thing either

Both of my trucks have a cap on them and I love them.
If I want to hull something that wont fit in the cap I put it on my trailer
I use it when I take the family on vacation. I put all the stuff in the back and lock it. It is safe and dry. I have even used it to change at the beach.
If I ever decide to go camping I have a ready made tent.
I do not have any dogs but a cap is great for them as well you can take them swimming and then put them in the back of the truck, they are safe and have room to move and can see what is going on around them.
The biggest draw back to a cap is you can not hull a lot of big stuff.

Topper
To me, it depends. Last 2 truck I bought I put tonneau's on, prior came with a topper. If security is the issue, then it's the topper. If convenience and carrying odd sized loads, then it's the tonneau. I don't keep anything valuable in my bed and I don't go camping so tonneau is my best choice. Best suggestion, make your list of uses then that will determine what's best for you.
