Default Difference between 2wd and 4wd steering rack and pinion

Does anyone know what makes the 2wd use a different rack and pinion then the 4wd? They call for different parts numbers. Motorcraft stopped making these so I would have to resort to aftermarket which I would rather not do. I bought a 4wd one at Oreillys for my truck and I have a motorcraft one that fits a 2wd from a job I never ended up doing a couple years ago. I have them sitting side by side and they look identical. My only thought would be maybe the internals are stronger on the 4wd. Anyone have any guesses?

Did the 2wd one work in your 4wd truck?
