The more I watch YouTube videos of crazy drivers the more I want a dash cam but I don't want one mounted to the windshield. I'm planning on mounting it to the dash in the "sun glasses / spare change / whatever area" & running a power port from under the dash. I don't need a rear facing one - I have one on my toy hauler.
I have a commercial 4-way split screen monitor for my trailer cameras but will mount it on a vertical stalk using the LF passenger seat floor bolt as my anchor point. I did the same in my Escape & Flex but was running a GPS, iPhone & full size iPad. Now I have a new system with built in nav & a Pro-Fit mount for the phone.
I got it because it is high temp rated, uses capacitors vs batteries, durable, and a big step up, component-wise, from the old a118 platform. Day and night shots are very crisp. Reviews are also very good. I have mine hard wired into the fuse box using this kit:
This allows the camera to stay on 24/7 and will automatically shut it off in case the vehicle battery dips below 11.6 volts. This will ensure that the vehicle will start, even if it is left sitting for days on end.
