Default Cruise Control

Hey, I have a small problem with my F150 FX4. One day the consol shifter jammed and would not release. I pulled off the cover, found the little white button (should drop when brake is pushed) and pushed it down, this started happening more frequent so I went to Ford for a new actuator. They didn't have one and I didn't want to spend the $300 so I pulled it apart, sure enough I could see burnt marks on the circuit board so I pulled the spring out and now the plunger sits all the way down and I can pull it out of park as needed. Problem solved... not quite, since then my cruise control has not worked. I can not garentee that they are related but I am pretty sure they are. Does anyone have any answers? I don't like bypassing things but I was poor at the time and well... I am still poor.

I'll venture an educated guess and say that the shifter selection is a "saftey" part of the cruise engage circuit. More than likely, Ford (or any other manufacturer) would not allow the cruise to "activate" unless the shifter is in "Drive", rather than Reverse, Park, or perhaps the 1 or 2 selection.

That, or that little white button you are refering to is fooling the cruise control into thinking the brake is applied, which we all know turns off the cruise.

Sounds plausible to me.

Hey boy, who says you can use my name. Check in the owners manual for the cruise control fuse location, could all be related.

Well BOY I've had it for quite a while and I like it. I know the cruise control is tapped into the speed sensor and will not work unless above 50kph or about 30mph. I don't see much point for it to have a drive only switch as it is unlikley you will drive that fast in reverse. I also have to mention that the little light on the dash does not even turn on. It has been a while but I am sure if you have your cruise on that light will stay on untill you shut the truck off. Just not sure if you can turn it on while parked. Is there anyone out there that could let me know?

The fuse was the first thing I checked.

When my cruise is on and engaged, I can tap the brake pedal and the cruise is off and the dash cruise indcator light is off; don't have to shut off the truck to shut that light off. Plus, the "off" button on the steering wheel shuts everything down as well. As to the cruise working in reverse, you'd be suprised with the dumb idiots that would try, then sue the manufacturer....Dealers have to assume the most stupid stuff can happen, and design a way to prevent. Ralph Nadar stuff.

And the only way the cruise dash light is "on" is when the cruise "SET" or "RES" button is pressed, and you have to be going at 40 MPH for them to work.

Yea, I'm sure I have the minimum "set" speed wrong.

Who the heck goes 25 MPH anyway?
