Default converter starting to go???

There has been quite a bit of clunking while driving lately and quite a bit of vibrations around 120km/h (70mph) and at idle. The other day I was driving home and all of a sudden the truck starting making a really weird noise and then when I cam to a stop it clunked back down to first gear.

Just looking for some input on wether or not you guys think this is the converter or something else.

Has there been a lot of problems with the converters in the 2004 f150s with the 5.4?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have not read specific problems with the converters in our trucks, but there have been posts on what fellow owners have described as premature failers with their transmissions. You can search on "transmissions" and read the posts. My truck has 84K on it's originial drivetrain, with no problems at all. I have had the transmission flushed, and I also have installed an aftermarket transmission cooler; heat is the worst enemy for an automatic transmission. I also do not tow often; an occasional trailer once or twice in the trucks lifetime. So, depending on how the truck was used by you or previous owners, as well as it's transmission maintenance would be key in determining it's longentivity with it's drivetrain.

Take it to a reputable transmission shop for a test ride and free estimate. Check with the BBB in your area on a shop you plan to use if you don't already know of a good transmission shop.

"Online forum diagnosis" for this type of fault is impossible to do. It's going to need an expert to correctly diagnose the fault for you.
