Default Codes p0021 & p0011

Just picked up a 2007 F150 (182k) miles. The previous owner had a shop replace the phaser kit at 170k. I saw the invoice for $2700. Test drive great. I get it and drive the truck 20 miles after getting it and these codes came on. They of course have no idea about it. Could this be possibly needs a good oil change or a vct issue? I would think the phasers would still be fine.

did you get a copy of the timing job invoice? If so, you may want to check up on it and see if it’s legit (ie whether work was actually performed, on that truck). Knowing obviously won’t fix your current symptoms, but if it wasnt, it my impact how you decide to proceed moving forward. It it was performed, shop may be able to provide some insight and/or give you some assistance even if it isn’t warrantied to new purchaser of the truck.

Here’s the invoice. Would the lockouts mean that they did not replace the phasers and just locked them and I need to tune the fix?

I’m not super familiar with details of locking out, but yes I believe that means phasers were not replaced.

Hopefully someone will come along with knowledge on any required tuning or best next steps.

invoice looks legit/real, and it was a lot of $, so maybe shop will at least be receptive to talk to you and provide some assistance (but not necessarily any free help).

I would hope they did the lockout tune, because the invoice shows $600 for lockout.
the wedges are like $50 and the other $550 would be for the tune.

All that work done and too silly (being nice here) not to do phasers?

This won’t end well. Check oil pressure, but I’m betting this is a flat hack job repair.

Your saving grace (as a very recent purchase) is if you live in an emissions testing area and you can gladly let them know that truck won’t ever pass inspection and you can have your money back or another vehicle be arranged.

if they locked the phasers out there is not reason to replace them, as they are now just fixed sprockets...

I don’t live in emissions testing area. I just called the shop and they confirmed that they did a livernois delete kit with the tune. I have no idea where the tuner box is nor does the seller. Could it need a tune reloaded?

Doing some research I’ve seen people unplug either vct’s and never have an issue aside from the vct code but the truck ran better. Would it be an issue to simply unplug the vct’s?

Our camphaser noise repair kits do require calibration to resolve any issues with codes such as the timing over advance codes you've mentioned. So it sounds like someone possibly forgot to install the Mycal tuning device to program the vehicle properly or if any shop software was used to flash the ECU they could have overwritten our calibration for the lockouts. So long as you can locate the Mycal tuning device you should be able to connect it to the vehicle and it will give you a status message such as this vehicle has been programmed / custom tuning installed. Feel free to shoot us a PM or give us a call if you can locate the tuner and we could help ensure the tune was successfully installed in the truck or send an update to the device online if someone overwrote the lockout calibration after it was installed. You can reach us here at 313-561-5500 ext 1 or email to tuning@livernoismotorsports.com

Here is the link to download the Mycal tuner update application in case it needs an update online.
