Default Cleaning the Engine

As you all know the east coast had a really bad winter and because of this the engine is beyond my normal spring cleaning. Is it ok to wash/hose the whole engine down? If so any recomendations on what cleaners to use and if not what should I do instead of spraying down the whole engine compartment?

I know you hear horror stories on here about people hosing down the engine and causing problems but according to our owners manual Ford reccomends to "spray motorcraft engine shampoo and degreaser on all parts that require cleaning and pressure rinse clean". That is how I have always cleaned my engine bays on all my vehicles and never had any problems.

Just be carfull and dont spray (using a power washer) on any elc. connectors, allthou the connectors are "weather tight" you can get water into them, this may couse problems down the road that will be hard to find.
