Default Clattering

I have an 06 screw with the 5.4 and it clatters at acceleration or under a load. I thought it was bad gas so I used octane booster and ran a few tanks of high octane gas. Its pretty loud and very annoying. Any suggestions?

If 4wd it is likely the front hubs...they make a rattle that sounds like detonation under moderate throttle. Put it in 4wd and see if the noise goes away or changes dramatically. If so, there's your issue.
They are vacuum operated and if there is a drop in vacuum they will try to engage and slowly wear away at the teeth. It could be a bad check valve, leaking vacuum line or a leaking hub. I replaced everything with good quality parts off amazon for much less $$ than dealer or parts store....same parts.
Look up "IWE vacuum hub" and it may also be the solenoid which is on the right hand upper firewall....follow vacuum lines from there to the hubs and blow through check vales to see if they are functioning correctly. If lines and valves look good then check or replace the solenoid since it is cheap and easy to swap. If that fails then replace BOTH hub actuators....don't do just one, I learned that the hard way. Hope that helps.

It sounds so much like the sound of valves clattering

It may be the cam position mechanism, but the hub issue I chased with different fuels, retarding timing on the Edge box etc..it was a simple fix once I figured out what it was.
