Bud, I can dish it out and I can take it. I work with people and you have to pay attention to what they are saying if you want to help them. Sorry if you took my statement the wrong way.
Yes you should also disconnect the negative battery cable before disconnecting any wire harness'. If you need to check a voltage once the connection it apart then you can temp. put battery cable back on just be sure to disconnect it again before you connect the wires back together. In essence you try not to let an arc of power jump across to something it shouldn't have power while plugging or unplugging any wires.
Those modules will rot out from corrosion an not allow your fuel pump to send fuel to the engine. They may start out working off and on or they might just go out completely! Hope that is a little more clear!
Oh BTW you should be able to just look under the truck at the FPDM and see if its corroded its fairly obvious once you look at it. Here is a pic of a good one and a bad one in place and side by side when removed just for reference. Hope this helps
