Default Checking cam timing 5.4

So I did a search first and could not find much of anything. There is a long story involved with this truck but in short I need to check the cam timing to verify that before I look to the cam phasers for my problem. How can I check base cam timing?

The only things I found online where diagrams that show "mark at 3:15" stuff but how accurate will that be......

My problem is a very loud banging on Bank 1 and a "cam over-retarded" code. The engine will stall or I can keep it running but the banging is very loud and runs very rough. If I rev it way up sometimes it goes away and runs good. If I then load the motor up a bit (put in gear and hold the brake on) The banging will come back. Only on that bank. I am thinking the phaser is getting stuck retarded. Other people have had this engine apart so I need to verify the cam timing first.

Any info would be great.

Ive seen many broken cam phasers cause that concern also seen low oil
pressure cause same condition. The vct system need at least 25 psi of oil pressure to work properly.
