So I let the truck idle for a little over an hour, and by the end of it the trans fluid is at the bottom of the hot section. So my guess is it's either fine or could just use a little bit. The first photo was with the truck off for the first test. Then when I just turned it on it barley touched the bottom tip. Then it slowly went up each time I checked it and then here's the final one touching the hot section.
After I hear back from you guys on what transfer case fluid to use I will change that out then drive it around and test the trans fluid again. The manual says it holds 2quarts and I probably lost close to one so don't want to drive it. So I'll change that fluid tomorrow when I know which one to buy.

You need to drive around for about 30 minutes the get the trans fluid to warm up, then you should check the level.

I've seen others on this forum say that Ford changed the transfer case fluid requirement to Mercon LV.

I read that somewhere but not on here, I just want to make sure I put the right stuff in and don't ruin it.

So from everything I have read ford discontinued Mercon, then made xl-12 and then discontinued that sometimes and now it's Mercon lv... But some people say you can use Mercon/Dexron, and then one guy used mobile one multi-vehicle synthetic ATF... At this point, I'm leaning towards Mercon lv but I want to hear what someone else has used in recent years and their t case is still ok.

I use redline D4 transmission fluid in my TC. The only thing to avoid is Mercon V if you have a transfer case with a 4A setting. The Mercon V doesn’t play well with the clutches in a case with a 4auto ability. Anything else should be fine.

Thanks for the info, I think I'm just gonna grab some Mercon lv. I might have to go to the dealer for it I think. Also, there's a user on here named @SCORGE and he uses Mercon v in his transfer case I saw on a thread earlier.

So I found this at Walmart (so I don't have to drive all the way to the ford dealer) it's Mercon Lv and Dexron vi certified and is licensed by ford so I think this would be fine for the transfer case, do you guys agree? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Tec...RoCiGAQAvD_BwE
