I never really had the hard diesel sounding problem - I changed them out because I had decided to change from 5-20 to 5-30, and I had read that the new VCT were better from upper cylinder lubrication, and so figured they were cheap and accessible, and after the plugs - how hard could they be?

I don't know why mine was different, but I was careful and took my time, and the seals were stuck like glue - ended up mutilating them to get them off - so trust me, get the seals and hope you don't have to use them. Get long handled torx screwdriver do you don't run the risk of dropping some tiny socket into the engine and you are good to go - the torx screws in the VCT themselves can't be removed separately from the solenoid, so no worry about them falling into the engine (at least not on my truck - YMMV).

Default 1 3/8 grommet

So I have a 2006 f150 Harley 5.4 3v and my vct solenoid are the 1 3/8 grommet with no notch to pry up with and no room to take it out. Is it possible I have a different motor from a later year in my truck?

Ok I've read some things that give me mixed signals. This is my first ford and I don't like the engine noises. I will use the steps I've read here and pull my valve cover off. None to happy about it tho lol I was looking at it today thinking there is no easy way and reading through here I found that to be true. Thank you

Hi All, i have a 2004 F150 and bought the VCT solenoid to replace it. I replaced the easy one (right side) first and was very easy and the solenoid pull up very smoth. From the driver side, i remove the seal and the screw, but the solenoid are stuck in his position inside. I tried very hard to pull up, but i dont want to break the plastic side. Anyone had the same issue. Have any idea what happen?

I have an '06 HD edition with 5.4L.
I am curious to know if, after changing your VCT solenoids, you believe that you needed to remove the valve covers?

No, why would you unless you have some other issue to address?

People keep saying that '07 owners need to pull the vavle covers to switch out the VCT solenoids, but i have an '07 king ranch with a late july build date and it has the big removable VCT covers.

i think most or a lot do. Depends more on build date of motor vs truck, which motor can have earlier build date.

Gets confusing re: head/spark plug difference in 08 models as well. And split/changeover date for that depends on date of engine build.

so i just took a closer look, and it seems my passenger side VCT seal is the old style wide plug, removable without taking off the valve cover, and the drivers side is the newer small plug, so I'm going to have to pull the cover. weird.
