Default Brake light problems

back in october a hail storm busted out the thrid brake light on my ford so i replaced it with an aftermarket one simple fix so i thought but a buddy of mine the other day noticed that every time i hit my brakes the reverse lights kick on and when i put it in reverse the brake lights come on. now i have no idea what it could be i hate to start cutting wires on the new light to get it to work. it just seems like i could be not thinking of something obvious. its a simple plug in system if anybody has any thoughts let me know

Usually you can only plug them in 1 way, but being an aftermarket, is it possible to reverse the plug?

Should be a pretty easy fix. Aggravating though.
