Default Brake controller

I have a 2 part question I just bought a 2006 F150 XLT with 5.4 engine 4x4. The truck has the trailer towing package (trans cooler, hitch and back wireing) Im looking to put a brake controller on it. Can I buy any brake controller from the auto parts for this truck? I herd I may need a adaptor? I also herd the wiring plug should be uner the dash somewhere to plug the controller in. I was going to buy a non digital controller the one you set the gain on. Will that work?
The other question is Im a bit confused on the trailer towing limit?
The truck also has 20" wheels looking on a tow site it says with a 4x4 5.4 with 20" wheels the rating is 9400 lbs. Im not sure what the tong weight should be.
Im planning on pulling a 24' enclosed car trailer with a 3000 lb car. I live where its flat and only going to tow a few times a year.

Any help would be great
Thanks Dennis

An adapter makes it plug and play. There is a slot right above the OBD port where it plugs in.

I can't speak about the non digital controllers. All I can say is I love my Prodigy controller. A little more expensive but def worth it. Been using it for 3 years and never had to adjust it.

You should be fine with that amount of weight.

Prodigy is the model that I have. It is made by Tekonsha. I bought mine online and they shipped it with the adapter but I do think some parts store carry them. It plugs right in above the OBD which is the plug in directly below the steering wheel. An OBD is for the on-board diagnostics system
