I have been thinking of spraying my bed rails. Would it also work on the 04 black plastic side steps?? or would it just wear off from stepping on??

I just left it as is. I think I did 2-3 coats, don't quite remember because it was a few months ago. The clear coat might have helped it last though

I read on one thread where the white buildup is oxidation and can be removed with heat prior to painting, and turns them back to black. Just be careful not to melt the plastic. If the oxidation is removed I do know that any paint will adhere much better.
