When I got the truck last year, I had planned on getting a cap for it in the future and with Winter almost over, the future is now. Since this was a cheap truck, I'm looking at getting a used cap and it appears the 6.5 foot length caps are the hardest to come by used.
My questions are, do I need to find a cap for the 04-08 models specifically or are their other years that will work for my truck? Basically, if I see a 97-03 or an 09-14, will those caps fit my truck?
Second, since I'm having issues finding used caps for my bed length, I may be stuck buying one in a non-matching color. How tough is it to repaint a cap?
The 04-08 will look the best because it follows the lines of the cab, bedsides and tailgate.
Anything else might, sorta fit, depending on how redneck you wanna look.
I bought one off Craigslist that was the wrong color and had the body shop spray it. They charged me $200.
Mine came with a Leer that had been Rino-lined. I like caps, I'm much more a function over form type of guy.... but my other truck has one ('84 GMC), so this one needed to have an open bed for taller items. My old bed toolbox has found a new home now. This is when I first got the truck December 2017. The cap is now sitting high up on a wood frame I'd built to drive the truck under, lift the cap, and hold it, making taking it on and off a breeze (doubles now as a spot to store some tractor implements and keep them dry-ish.
you guys are reminding me of when I first got my truck in 2014. Mine had an ATC shell on it when I got it. I sold it for 200 bucks on CL. Stupid idea. I really miss mine. On a side note, any body shop can paint it to color match.
ARE Z cap on a 2017. It's lined with carpet that matches the Bedrug I've got in there. Used a tailgate seal off of Amazon to keep the water and dust out, does the job. Got it from a local ARE dealer.
