Hello all - I just bought a 2007 5.4 off city auction. Listing only mentioned a trans fault (looks to be fluid temp sensor erratic readings) but it turns out the thing runs horribly. No engine codes since I got it. Shudders and has no power. Doesn't matter if cold or warm. I read as much as I could and watched some videos.
- I have a decent scanner that runs a power balance and it shows all of bank 2 missing, despite the lack of codes. (pic below)
- One seemingly knowledgeable youtube technician said the barometric pressure Hz would be dropping if a cat was blocked. Mine is not. Mine reads 134.5, I am at 5500ft. Dunno if that is right, but it doesn't change like he said it would if blocked. No sulfur smell either.
- Fuel pressure desired and actual both say 39psi
- Bank 2 short term fuel trim reads neg 5 to 8 or so, the rest are around 0. This probably jives with the bank missing and not burning some/all fuel.
- Both VCT timing advance error values hover around zero. With all the chatter about the phasers i thought I'd find my smoking gun here, but guess not.
- I sprayed carb cleaner all around the intake and no change.
Not sure where to go next. I guess I can hook up a noid light to see if the bank 2 injectors are getting a firing signal. This is my first 5.4 (or Ford in general). Any advice from you all experienced with these is greatly appreciated, thanks.
I am suspicious that bank 2 cat is clogged.
Others with more 5.4 experience may have other suggestions
You may be right. I just disconnected at the collector and wedged a wrench in there to allow some gas to escape and ran it again. Still present but not as pronounced. Now if I could just figure out how to disconnect the downstream exhaust joint clamp without cutting it...
Edit - I disconnected both O2 sensors for this. Not sure if that was right, but it seemed like the best way to minimize the ECU messing with the fuel for incorrect readings. It was a cold start so maybe it didn't matter.

Reason: Add info
Seems like that was it. I cut the clamp and removed that section of exhaust.... and poured out a big pile of black powder from the cat. So I'll replace it and try to figure out what caused it. perhaps a stuck injector or something.
The material in the cats can be recycled. My guess you will get $150 for the old cat maybe much more. I once got $820 at a recycler on a foreign car cat but I don't remember brand.
