Default Baffled 5.4l

2004 f150 5.4

I was driving the truck at about 10 degrees outside and it started running really rough I pulled over and it died. I got it to start one more time then it died and would just turn over and not even attempt to start. had codes read and came up with:
P0340 camshaft position sensor cicuit bank1
p0345 camshaft position sensor cicuit bank2
Changed the cmp's on both banks nothing.
took it to a ford dealer to the tune of $300 they had it for a week and said must be internal damage and needed a new motor for $6700.00. Played with the truck all weekend changed plugs as they needed it anyway and since the dealer just had them all out. finally remember reading something on the forum about pulling the plugs to the cmp's and trying to start in limp mode did that and the truck fired up. plug them back in and it will just crank away forever! unplug them again and it will start. I am lost as to where to go from here without just throwing parts at it randomly.

so when the sensor is plugged in it won't start? sounds like a faulty sensor or wiring for the sensor. how well does it run not plugged in?

does'nt run bad but i would'nt say perfect.checked wiring it looked good. changed the sensors again just cause they were cheap and the result is the same plugged in no start. un plugged it starts!

A short maybe? I *think* you can diagnose by pulling the fuse and then checking for continuity between the sensor lead and ground.

if your unplugging both cmp's and it starts my first thought is do you run any type of programmer ?? if so take it off and try it..
if you don.t I would be checking the pcm (powertrain control mudule) the cmp's are just inputs to the pcm to tell it cam position. don't think you have a wiring issue both cmps are on two diiferent circuits.. you may nrrd to bring it back to the dealer and expalin to them what you have done to start it and to issue you a credit on your 300.00 for the correct diagnosis..
My thought is pcm..
if your under 80k and 8 years the pcm is covered under the emmisions warranty..
