Default Bad mpg on my 5.4l

Ok I'm new and I have a lot of research and getting many different options I bought a used f1 in November of 2013 entering 2014. I have seen a lot of people averaging 13-15 mpg and I'm here getting 10! Yea I know its a truck and I shouldn't care for my mpg but if people are getting 13-15 and I'm getting 10 there's something wrong. I did a trip to NC with the bed fully loaded and 4 passengers averaging 70mph and I average 16 mpg not bad. but back in miami I do a lot of city just to school (a total of like 10-12 miles round trip) and really never do highway. I have a 25 gal tank, 230-240 miles to a tank and I keep my rpms at below 2,000. The only mods I did was unbolt my muffler to free up some back pressure but still have the factory cats and y pipe. Any tips like full exhaust, chips, plugs change etc In not sure if the previous owner has ever don't a plug change or a trans change or diff etc any ideas

2004 f150 xlt 4x4 new body style ( not heritage)
3.55 gears non limited slip and I have a 31" or so tire
Leveling kit

Im looking into a full exhaust and chip and some tune up like changing all fluids and spark and CAI

With bigger tire, 10 MPG around town is about normal. 13-15 is highway or combined mileage.

I'd try cleaning the MAF, new air cleaner, check the plugs, fuel filter, but I doubt you're going to get much of an improvement. Remember, if you're running larger than stock tires your odometer is off, and so are your fuel mileage calculations.

He's running 31 inch tires. Stock fx4 tires are like 32 or so? And I think most 4x4 f150s are the 275/65r18. So he's not running big tires that would kill his mileage.

Sounds like you drive strictly city in Miami. I don't think 10 MPG is unreasonable with the 5.4 4x4 in city driving. There is a pretty significant MPG drop in city compared to highway with these vehicles.

Also, are you hand calculating this mileage or going by the dash or tuner read out? They are known to be off by 1-2 MPG at times. What someone claims to get and what someone gets are two different things as well. Every truck is different. If you speedo is off then your MPG will be off as well.

I get about 11 here around town and on backroads. On the highway 15-19 depending what way I'm headed. Being in the mountains and all I think that's not too bad.

i just don't know anymore i took off my tb a few months ago and cleaned it but today i looked at it again and was a little dirty but when look into the intake manifiold its really gunky with black grime ( its always been dirty previously when i cleaned the tb) is that washable with like brake cleaner or carb cleaner but i don't wana risk it if its stupid and the manifold is the number one key of operation and i dont want to screw it up. over the summer I'm gan a try to do my Trans, diff fluid change and change my sparks because i dont know of the previous owner has ever done those maintenance does anyone know where i can get a cheap extractor (but the good ones) iv seen th good ones for like 50-60 is that a good price to pay to not risk a breakage and paying $$$$$$$$$ for the head to be pulled out
