Unhappy Axle slop

Hi guys, I have a 2005 F150 XL 4x4 with a 3:55 traction loc rear diff. The problem i have is alot of end play in the axles. Shake the truck back and forth and it has a pronounced clunk. When I changed the brake pads and rotors I noticed it has maybe an 1/8 inch end play in the axles. Is this caused by the clutches wearing out? Put the rear of the truck on jackstands and it turns smoothly with no noises, just the end play in the axles. I realize because of the brakes the axles can only move so far , but is this a safety issue? How much is the going rate to have the rear diff rebuilt? Thanks

Do you mean axle in and out slop? Like shake the bed side to side and hear a clunk? That's normal it's just the c clips allowing it

Thats why I hate c clip axles. Seems so wrong to have slop like that.

They make c clip eliminator kits to get rid of that slop for high hp or road racing applications.

Yes, end play, shake the truck from side to side and the clunk is noticeable . I know the rear end seems to work fine. Tried it out today, good ole power brake and broiled both tires, nice set of posi marks. So I guess I wont worry about it. Thanks for the help guys.
