Default Assistance/advice please

My 2005 F150 5.4 L has 165,000 miles almost all highway. I got it with 145,000 miles on it from the company I retired from. I have only put 20,000 miles on it in 4 years. It runs pretty good. It has made the diesel noise since I got it and I have been told it is the cam phasers. However, I have been told different stories about what to do or what might happen....Master Ford Fleet Mechanic says drive and don't worry about it....my Mechanic says bad design and if I spend the money to fix it sooner than later it will start ticking/knocking again. His shop will not rebuilt this series engine nor will they install a reman unit. My question if I keep driving will it tear itself apart one ? Can I expect another 50,000 miles out of it without repairs ? Can a 4.6 L 2 valve engine be used to replace it without breaking the bank ? My 1999 4.6 has 240,000 miles and runs like a charm.

Any other thoughts ??? What would be involved in swapping in a 5.4 L 2 valve engine ??
